Electrolysis (Hair Removal)

There is a misconception that any hair removal causes re-growth to become more coarse than before. Although vellus hair can be stimulated to become terminal hair, this is usually not the case. The misconception came about from the use of shaving to remove hair. Shaving cuts the hair at the skin's surface and since hair grows from the bottom of the follicle, the cut hair is now thicker at the top giving the impression that the hair is actually growing thicker. This is why a man's stubble is very hard and rough while a beard is much softer. With other depilatory methods where the hair is removed from the follicle, the new hair will have the normal fine tip.

Further, with continued removal of new hair growth by waxing for example, there is a decline in the number of hairs that actually re-grow, so not only is re-growth finer, it is more sparse.

ELECTROLYSIS is the only proven method to remove hair permanently. At Warren's, we use the Sofblend T~80 epilator manufactured in Brampton by Tapeography In electrolysis, hair is removed by inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle and passing a direct current through it for a few seconds. This is known as the galvanic method. The current converts the salts in the follicle to lye, a chemical which destroys the hair root and prevents new hair growth. In practical terms, this method is slow, requiring up to two minutes to destroy a single root. Usually current is passed through the follicle for only a few seconds so that a larger area can be treated. It therefore requires many treatments before the hair root is completely destroyed. Another method is called thermolysis where a high frequency current is passed through the needle. This method heats the root of the hair to destroy it. Unfortunately, this method does not seem to work too well. However, by combining these two methods, we have what is known as the blend system. Because thermolysis heats the lye created by the galvanic current, the lye is more aggressive in its destruction of the hair root and so reduces the number of treatments required to destroy the root. For the best possible results, we use the Sofblend T~80^R epilator in the blend modality. For clients who are pregnant, and others for whom direct current is contra-indicated, we use themolysis.
